PNGRFL
Our BETTER Philosophy

Better People. Better Sport. Better Nation.

The success of any organisation is shaped by the culture and environment it creates — both internally and externally. For PNGRFL, that culture begins with a clear sense of purpose.

Our BETTER philosophy provides the foundation for how we lead, how we work, how we develop people and how we represent rugby league throughout Papua New Guinea. It defines the standards we set for ourselves and the behaviours we expect across the organisation and the game.

At its heart is a simple belief

When we develop better people, we build a better sport — and through a better sport, we can contribute to a better nation.

Our Vision

Better People.
Better Sport.
Better Nation.

PNGRFL’s vision reflects an ambition that extends beyond competition and performance. It recognises the role rugby league can play in developing people, strengthening communities and contributing positively to Papua New Guinea.

Our Mission

Developing better people by connecting through rugby league.

Rugby league provides a powerful connection between people, communities and regions across Papua New Guinea. PNGRFL’s mission is to use that connection to create opportunities for people to develop — as players, coaches, referees, administrators, leaders, volunteers and members of their communities.

The mission places people at the centre of the game. It reminds us that rugby league is not only about what happens on the field. It is also about what the game can teach, inspire and contribute to the lives of those who participate in it.

Stands For

Believe

We believe in achieving our Mission and Vision.

Belief provides the foundation for everything PNGRFL seeks to achieve. We believe in the purpose of rugby league and in its ability to develop people, create opportunity and bring communities together. We believe in our vision of Better People. Better Sport. Better Nation. And we believe that every person involved in the game has a role to play in helping achieve that vision.

E 02

Empower

We are committed to empowering our people.

PNGRFL seeks to create environments where people are supported, encouraged and given opportunities to develop. Empowerment means giving people the confidence, skills, responsibility and opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the game. Whether they are players, coaches, officials, administrators, volunteers or leaders, we want people throughout rugby league to have the opportunity to grow and make a positive contribution.

T 03

Trust

We trust each other and take pride in the unique abilities of all.

Trust is essential to strong teams, strong organisations and strong communities. At PNGRFL, trust means respecting the contribution of others, recognising different strengths and creating an environment where people can work together with confidence. We value the different abilities, experiences and perspectives people bring to rugby league and recognise that the game is stronger when those contributions are respected.

T 04

Together

We are a team, and we strive to work together.

Rugby league is built on teamwork. No player, team, club, league or organisation succeeds alone. Working together means recognising that the growth of rugby league depends on cooperation between players, coaches, officials, administrators, affiliated leagues, communities, partners and supporters. PNGRFL seeks to build a culture where people work collaboratively towards a shared purpose and where the success of the game is a collective responsibility.

E 05

Excellence

We aspire to achieve excellence in all we do.

Excellence means continually seeking to improve. It applies not only to performance on the field, but also to coaching, administration, governance, officiating, player welfare, competition delivery and the way PNGRFL represents the game. We aim to set high standards, learn from experience and continually improve the way rugby league is developed and administered across Papua New Guinea.

R 06

Resilience

We are resilient people.

Resilience is deeply connected to the character of Papua New Guinea and its people. It is the ability to respond to challenges, learn, adapt and continue moving forward. In rugby league, resilience is demonstrated every day — by players overcoming setbacks, communities building the game with limited resources, volunteers giving their time and organisations working to create better opportunities. PNGRFL seeks to reflect that same resilience in the way it leads and develops the sport.

Living the BETTER Values

BETTER is more than a statement displayed on a wall.

It is intended to guide how PNGRFL people work, make decisions, lead others and represent the game. The philosophy applies across every level of the organisation.

The strength of the BETTER philosophy is that the same values can guide both organisational culture and behaviour throughout the wider rugby league community.
