Port Moresby, 22 April 2026: The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) & PNG National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC)<\/a> are set to deliver a defining moment in its season as Round 3 of the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup, takes on a greater significance through the \u201cMen in League\u201d round, themed around Mental Health, placing mental strength, discipline, and character at the centre of the game.

The Men in League Round this year, partners with the Digicel PNG Foundation<\/a>\u2019s Men of Honour program, which celebrates men across PNG who lead with integrity, courage and compassion. It recognizes those who build peace, strengthen families, and uplift their communities through their actions.

As rugby league continues to grow across the country, PNGRFL is reinforcing an important message. Strength is no longer defined by physical ability alone, but by the capacity to lead, remain composed under pressure, and make the right decisions in challenging moments.

PNGRFL CEO, Stanley Hondina<\/a>, said the initiative reflects a broader commitment to shaping better individuals through sport.

\u201cRugby league has always played a powerful role in our communities. It is more than a game, it is a platform that shapes behaviour, discipline, and leadership. The year’s theme is about reminding players that true strength is shown in how they respond to pressure and how they carry themselves every day.”

\u201cWe want our players to understand that their decisions matter. When they choose respect, self-control, and teamwork, they are not only improving as athletes but also contributing to stronger communities,\u201d Hondina said.

At the core of Round 3 is a simple but powerful message and following on from the SP PNG Hunters \u201cAnti-Violence\u201d Round last week: \u201cNot every thought deserves a reaction.\u201d In a fast-paced and emotional sport, players are constantly faced with moments that test their discipline. The ability to pause, remain focused, and act with purpose is what separates reaction from leadership.

This message reflects the realities faced by players today. Beyond the physical demands of the game, many are managing expectations from family, coaches, and their communities. In these moments, mental strength becomes critical, allowing players to stay grounded and aligned with their values.

PNGRFL\u2019s Pathways & Performance Elite Competition Manager, Peter Bari, highlighted this message in building strong teams and individuals.

\u201cMental health is a key part of performance and personal growth. Players deal with different pressures every day, and it is important that they feel supported and connected within their teams. Creating safe environments allows players to speak up and stay focused,\u201d Bari said.
