The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League sadly informs all its partners, stakeholders and the extended rugby league family throughout PNG and overseas on the passing of former Chairman and current Director Don Fox, OBE.
PNGRFL Chairman Sandis Tsaka in a statement said we were notified of Don’s passing by email this morning (Monday July 6, 2020) by his beloved wife Janet Fox.
Don Fox aged 78 passed away on Friday 3rd July, 3am at Mater Private Hospital, after battling Leukemia, since being admitted to hospital on the 6th April.
An emotional Tsaka said: “It is a very sad day for me personally and for rugby league in PNG. His contribution to rugby league has been immense. Don has been a mentor to a many of us and we will sadly miss his wise counsel and presence as it was always special to be in his company whenever we had the opportunity.”
He said Donal Leslie Fox, born on January 6th, 1942 at Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia first came to PNG in 1966 as an accountant.
His illustrious involvement with PNG rugby league began that same year when he joined the Magani Badili Rugby League club in Port Moresby as a goal kicking front rower.
He served in other various capacities including being the inaugural Chairman of Toyota Enga Mioks, Chairman of the PNG National Rugby League, Chairman of the PNGRFL and as an Independent Director until his passing.
On May 13, 2019 Don was awarded Life Membership of the PNGRFL in Port Moresby.
Don’s other sporting passion was cricket and on his arrival in 1966 joined the Colts Cricket club in Port Moresby. He represented Port Moresby and PNG on numerous occasions.
Tsaka said: “On behalf of his colleagues on the PNGRFL Board , CEO Reatau Rau and staff and the six tiers of the PNGRFL, Partners, affiliates, officials, players and our extended rugby league families in PNG and abroad, I extend our deepest and sincere condolences to Mrs. Janet Fox, daughters Joanne, Simone and Monique, their families and six beautiful grand children on the loss of your husband, dad, bubu and ‘Our Don’ Mr. Donal Leslie Fox OBE. May he rest in eternal peace.”
Tsaka added that details of funeral arrangements and other information will be made known after consultation with the family.
